The Recon Selection Aptitude Test is a physical fitness test that you’ll need to take if you’re wanting to become a Reconnaissance Marine. As one of the many physical tests you’ll take throughout the Recon Marine pipeline, the RSAT is very important. WHAT IS THE RECON SELECTION APTITUDE TEST (RSAT)?

The Recon Selection Aptitude Test (RSAT) is one of the first physical fitness tests you will take on your journey to the Recon Marine pipeline. Although the “A” in RSAT is for “Aptitude,” this is no academic test. Instead, you’ll be expected to be in peak physical shape, and you’ll have to prove to the Recon instructors that you’re worthy of being given a shot to join their community. 

WHY DO YOU TAKE THE RECON SELECTION APTITUDE TEST (RSAT)?

The reason why Recon Marines test Recon candidates through the Recon Selection Aptitude Test (RSAT) is to figure out who is in good enough shape to get into selection. Since there are many rigors ahead in Recon training, the Marine Corps does not want ill prepared candidates showing up to selection where they are simply just not prepared. The RSAT is used as a baseline for candidates looking to put in their package to lateral transfer into Recon training, as well as for MART Marines to class up into the Recon Training and Assessment Program (RTAP).

WHAT’S TESTED IN THE RECON SELECTION APTITUDE TEST (RSAT)?

While this is subject to change, the RSAT currently consists of a max set of pullups, max situps in 2 minutes, max pushups in 2 minutes, a 3 mile run, and a 500m swim in full cammies (no boots), using either side or breast stroke. Then, you will complete a 25 meter underwater swim, conduct a rifle retrieval, and tow that rifle for 25 meters without letting it touch the water. Afterwards, you will finish up with a 30 minute tread. 

Your target scores for these events are: Pullups - 15+, Crunches - 85+, Pushups - 60+, 3 Mile Run - 19:30 or less, 500M Swim - 15:00 or less. The rest of the events are for completion.


HOW CAN YOU PREPARE FOR THE RECON SELECTION APTITUDE TEST (RSAT)?

Your form on the calisthenics will be scrutinized, so make sure that you practice your form and make every rep count. Swimming in cammies is a whole different ball game compared to swimming slick, so make sure to work on your swimming form to maximize your chances of success in the pool. If you want to humble yourself, find an old pair of BDU’s and go swim a 500M. If you practice underwaters, make sure to do it SAFELY and with a lifeguard and buddy present. It also wouldn’t hurt to begin practicing treading water for extended periods of time!
